SOCIAL AND CULTURAL
The role of social development is to create incentives and
attitudes that reinforce the confidence of citizens in their country,
society, and state. What the Foundation has undertaken in this sector
has been in two directions: general social services as well as promoting
the spirit of cooperation. The invigoration of social, cultural, and
sporting life is a vital condition for building a strong civil society
and for creating an individual who is socially capable and economically
productive. On these bases, the Foundation focuses on strengthening
civil society and invigorating cultural and sporting activity and
all that encourages people to meet and interact.
The Foundation provides help and support to a number of associations
that focus on the needs of the handicapped, orphans, the elderly,
and other marginalized groups. The Foundation supports the holding
of Artisanal exhibits that create incentives to promote local production
and marketing. It also sponsors scouting camps and sporting tournaments
and other youth activities as well as musical festivals and concerts.
The Foundation supports many municipal councils, and educational institutions,
and NGOs in their attempts to invigorate cultural life and the preservation
of cultural heritage.
Notable projects have included the following:
Theatre, Beino
Akkar, and in Municipal Center, Rahbeh, Akkar.
Renovation
of the old Bazirkan Souq, Tripoli, in cooperation with the Municipality
of Tripoli.
Issam Fares
Library, part of the Ajyal Cultural Complex, Kfarhata, North Lebanon.
Issam Fares
Sports and Social Complex, Islamic Zakat Organization, Abi Samra,

Support for
the Baalbek, Beiteddine, and other festivals.
The Foundation also undertakes significant humanitarian initiatives
in times of special need: in 1996 the Foundation provided assistance
to the victims of the Israeli attacks in South Lebanon. It also helped
in transporting victims for medical treatment outside of Lebanon after
the Qana massacre in that year.
After the liberation of South Lebanon in May 2000, the Foundation
provided support to social organizations and institutions in the newly
liberated areas.
