Middle East: Post Iraq

Woodrow Wilson's International Center for Scholars - the Middle East project, with the collaboration of Fares Foundation, held a symposium on the Middle East: Post Iraq on Monday June 16th, 2003 in the conference room of Woodrow Wilson's Center in Washington D.C. - USA. Items on the agenda of the conference included the following:
-A welcoming speech delivered by Mr. Lee Hamilton, President of the Center and Mr. Nijad Fares, Chairman and CEO of Link Group.

-Module one: Post Iraq War Middle East and Prospects of Liberalization, chaired by Mr. Robert Pelletrean, former assistant Secretary of State - Near East and North Africa Bureau. Dr. Shibley Telhami, from the University of Maryland, College Park and Senior Fellow at the Saban Center, the Brookings Institutions, lectured on Anwar Sadat, Professor for Peace and Development. Mrs. Marina Ottoway, Senior Associate at Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, also took the floor.

-Module two: The Arab-Israeli Conflict: Outstanding Issues, presided by Mrs. Phyllus Oakley, Former Assistant Secretary of State, Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration. Mr. Khalil Shikaki, Associate Professor of Political Sciences at Bir Zeit University and Director of the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research (PSR) in Ramallah, Mrs. Ellen Laipson, President and CEO of the Henry L. Simson Center, Mr. William Quand, Vice-Provost for International Affairs and Professor of Politics at the Woodrow Wilson Department of Politics in University of Virginia, and Mr. Zibguinio Brajinsky, ex-adviser of President Carter to the National Security Affairs, delivered speeches in this regard.

-Module three: Chaired by Edward Walker, President and CEO, Middle East Institute, shed light on the Prospects for the Road Map. Speakers included Mrs. Bouthaina Shaaban, Director of Foreign Media Department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Syrian Arab Republic, Mr. Abdullah Bou Habib, adviser to the Deputy Prime Minister in the Government of Lebanon, and Dennis Ross, Director and Ziegle distinguished fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.
